Goodnight, Denver

Miss L absolutely loves playing with and reading books  - both the classics and new age prints. The collection started with the many books we were gifted at our baby shower{s}. I also started a tradition on our first family vacation in 2012 to Palm Desert, CA to purchase a new book from every trip - which adds even greater fun to the library.

Recently, Miss L has initiated this quirky obsession with a particular few paperbacks - the Goodnight series.
We have:
  • Goodnight Moon
  • Goodnight Ipad {a hilarious parody written by "Ann Droyd"}
  • Goodnight Minnesota
  • Goodnight Michigan {xmas gift from Grandma Lyn}
  • Goodnight Chicago {from our April trip to Chi-Town}
  • Goodnight Denver {gift from daddy}
Below are some photos of how Miss L travels around our apartment with her beloved Goodnight books...

Jeremy and I burst into laughter when we walked into the Bathroom to this sight!

Miss L loves "stacking" these books next to her on the couch.

Soo happy with her collection {et al}

This is Miss L "running away" {her words, not mine} with her books.

Goodnight, Denver!

A place to call home!

It's official - we are under contract for our new home in CO and could not be more thrilled!

It feels so good to know the mission is accomplished, as well as to have found a home that we love in a neighborhood that seems to fit us like a glove- complete with Parks, Trails and a Pool {and Kiddie Pool}! Even though this is "home offer #2," it feels even better than the home we lost last week. Another testament to "everything happens for a reason."

The front of the home features tudor-style architecture - which I enjoy, but J needed to step inside the double doors to truly appreciate this beauty!

Below are a few sneak peak photos - mind you, it could be a Pottery Barn model home, so I am going to take a plethora of photos during our inspection to try to mock the current admiral and trendy style.

Welcome to the Homestead!
Office to the immediate left - which will inevitably transform into Miss L's play space
Sitting Room on left, followed by Formal Dining Room

Hello, Pretty! I am soo excited for this kitchen!
The all-important "Guest Bedroom" - there is always a room at our Inn

The nicely appointed Ensuite Bathroom for the Guest Bedroom

Nice patio and fenced in yard with the Greenbelt {walking trails, green space} on the other side.
I plan to roast loads of marshmallows for s'mores on the gas fire pit!

23 months

Wow, just one more month until Miss L turns 2! There is no doubt that her beautiful smile and sparkly personality fills our lives and hearts.

I'm not quite certain on her stats and measurements at 23 months - she seems about the same size the last few months as physical growth has slowed down, but her cognitive skills continue to grow by leaps and bounds!

She is very talkative these days, often holding a conversation back and forth with us; yet, practicing a little "stranger danger" with people on the street.

A couple of common phrases include:
  • Did you hear that noise? {referencing a noise we all heard}
  • Pumpkin bread, pumpkin bread! {usually is exclaimed from the comfort of her car seat...as we pass by a Starbucks - I wonder who got her started on THAT!}
  • "How I wonder what you are!" {shouted out loud, and sometimes followed with the remainder of Twinkle, Twinkle - her favorite nursery rhyme.
Miss L counts 1-10, ABC's, identifies most colors and shapes. She {usually} sleeps about 11-12 hours each night and then naps in the early afternoon for 2-3 hours.

Tonight, we enjoyed a quick dinner at the nearby Mall {it happens to have a great outdoor section - "The Vistas" which is like a big play ground for these two...}, followed by a grocery trip to a new Super Target, of course!

Hanging with Daddy at the Mall this beautiful evening!

Her favorite foods include: fresh raspberries, oatmeal, anything-pumpkin, and everything smothered in creamy peanut butter goodness.

We have found a "trick" to getting Miss L to eat lamb from our gyro - we give it to her on a toothpick! Of course, we are careful with this endeavor, but it works like a charm...every time!

Since our move to CO - swimming is our favorite past time...hence, the attempt to wear our swimsuit below...

Only one more month until we have a 2 year old, I'd better stock up on some wine! {tear}

Colorado Update

After our 14 hours of fun {previous post}, us girls have spent the last 14 days in beautiful Colorado! So far, I think Colorado is the new Florida - full of transplants {hence, no one is "from" Colorado} minus the mass quantities of senior citizens, 300+ days of sunshine per year, and it feels like vacay-land to me! Also, Denver has EVERYTHING as far as restaurants and retailers that has shut-down in other areas we have resided in - It's like the land where everything stays open! This is kind of the cherry-on-top, aside from the mountain views!

The {Temporary} Homestead: J secured a one-bedroom furnished apartment in the popular Greenwood Village, near DTC {code for: Denver Tech Center}. It is a condo-style hotel place with some people using it as a hotel and some people using it as a long-term apartment = a strange dynamic of professionals, families, and leisure travels...BUT it has a Pool and that is a "must" for the Colorado Summer {so I gather}.

The initial days included unpacking our boxes of food, clothes and supplies that we traveled 14 hours with to make this house our home, that is, for a little while.

Daily challenges include the size of this place is maybe 300 sq ft...yep, less than 10% of the size of our previous home which makes everything smaller - less seating space, less room to run for Miss L and Mr. Cole, the bathroom is teeny-tiny, and of course the galley kitchen is less than adequate...basically, I feel like we are "camping" or roughing it! The one bedroom translates to little girl sleeping in her pack-n-play in our room which often involves less-than-great sleep for all 3 of us. She has started a habit of waking at 5:30am, jumping for joy from her pack-n-play, as she can visually see mommy and daddy from her bed. Miss L runs the roost for an hour and then heads back to her sleeping quarters to sleep until 9:30...maybe 10am...which kind of throws off our day. Good thing I'm a "go with the flow mommy" and threw out "schedules" before she was born!

The {Future} Homestead: We have toured about 20 homes, in 4 different areas {suburbs} of Denver, while on a mission to find the right area. With J working at the airport and the airport located in God's country, far, far away from life in Denver; it poses a big challenge to find a home in an area we like, with an acceptable commute.

The next and perhaps inherit challenge is- this is our 4th home purchase {5th "property" including our hi-rise rental}. With every new/next home, it is human nature to want it better, sometimes bigger, but definitely more your style with less sacrifices. Some people don't purchase 4 homes in their lifetime, let alone, 4 homes in 9 years!!

The last challenge and a bit one at that - homes in Colorado are far different than what we are used to in the Midwest. Each geographic area of the Midwest has it's strong suits in house; however, once you head west, things are different. Smaller lots {less to maintain + cost of land}, less green space {to counter high irrigation rates}, fewer vaulted ceilings {more energy efficient} and when you add them up you find tons of beautiful homes that are RIGHT next to their neighbors and offer very little {sometimes NONE} lawn. It is difficult to quickly adjust to the "Colorado way." Full disclosure: there are tons of neighborhood parks, trails, community spaces and of course a million acres of "playground" to go and explore here.

We are feeling really good about one area in particular; just 10-15 minutes away from the best mall in the City, tons of restaurants, the main highway, best school district in the state, 2 miles to a brand new hospital, mountain views from most roadways and walking paths, etc...etc... We find a house that exceeds our anticipated budget, but we drool and we run to our excel spreadsheet to "crunch the numbers" and we decided to put an offer on this beauty {on Friday}, only to find out we were in a match with two other buyers and one in particular that "wanted it at all costs." Sigh...back to square one.

Pit & Peak
Something J and I "borrowed" from the Kardashian family a long time ago was to identify the "pit and peak" or "high and low" of our day/week/vacation/etc. I would say we mostly use this communication tool after vacations, but I think it is handy to ask whenever!

My Pit of the past two weeks have been feelings of guilt as a mom, being frustrated spending every waking minute with Miss L. For nearly the first 10 days, I never left the apartment alone to do anything - sun bathe, grocery shop, get a pedi, etc. I just don't think it is healthy for anyone to spend every waking minute in this situation; everyone needs a re-charge and some personal time. I really felt guilty for feeling so bad about being a stay-at-home-mom. I understand this is what I signed-up for, I understand this is the hardest job in the world, but I kind of really missed getting dressed up and feeling so fulfilled. {insert typical mommy guilt - to work or not to work} I have since communicated this to my partner and have physically escaped the 300 sq ft apartment on a few occasions...even to read by the Pool!

My Peak would have to be this morning. Miss L slept in until 8:30, I made us pumpkin pancakes to share and then while Daddy golfed with some friends, us girls packed up and went to the Farmers Market in our new {hopeful} home town of Parker. It was an awesome Farmers Market and the weather was amazing. We loved strolling the charming downtown village and reading about the historic landmarks on the side streets nestled within the large Victorian homes. It really felt like "home" to me and Miss L loved seeing all of the 4-legged friends strolling the marketplace. Below is snapshot of our fun!

14 hours of...

________ . Let me fill in the blank with the highs and lows, as we make our way {nearly} across the country .

Saturday morning, we woke up at 5am to make the final preparations to leave our Minnesota home. Our home went on the market at 5pm Friday evening with all showings starting on Saturday; so we are feeling pretty good leaving and knowing that our home is in the best possible shape - glowing granite and fresh vacuum marks on the carpet throughout. :) We leave at 6am feeling anxious for our first showing scheduled for 10:30am.

6:00am | Put the princess in her carseat, praying she stays asleep. {not a fat chance}

6:22am | "I wanna get out" {of her car seat}- Miss L says, as Mr. Cole begins to meow. This is this equivalent of "Are we there yet?" Jer and I give each other a nervous look and wonder how the next 13.5 hours are going to pan out.

Mmmm...hot cakes!
7am | Stop at McDonald's for breakfast. We are delighted as Miss L devoured all three of her hot cakes. Finally, a meal that didn't include peanut butter!

7:30am | It seems that maybe she is going to experience a "food coma" and looks sleepy; meanwhile, Mr. Cole is still meowing. We decide to let Mr. Cole out of his cage...wrong decision. Miss L has a new found excitement for her furry brother. Uh oh!

See Mr. Cole as "high" as he can go!

9am | 3 hours into the trip, time to change drivers - we stop at a Kum & Go Gas Station - interesting "Iowa gas station" - Daddy and Miss L pick a "flower" for mommy, while I go search for coffee as it is my turn. I am overjoyed as this coffee station has tons of coffee varieties AND a massive coffee creamer station with all of my faves - I had a hard time selecting. I decide to go "house blend + caramel macchiato creamer"

10am | Naptime through Iowa - peace and quiet for mommy to reflect. As I drive across the prairie lands, I experience a feeling of anticipation that might parallel our early American settlers as they "headed west" in search of gold and prosperity.

I drive as the rest of the car naps

Iowa's many windmills
An Iowa Casino...LOL!

11:30am | Enter Nebraska...or rather enter Omaha, as this is nearly the only thing is this VERY long state. We decide I-80 in Nebraska is to Colorado, as I-75 in Georgia is to Florida. It is long and never-ending leading into your final destination.

1pm | Stopped at Lincoln, NE Airport for gas {thank you, Hertz!} and went downtown for some Chipotle. We ate outside for fresh air and found downtown Lincoln to be a really cute, nice and clean college town. Hard to believe we are still in "Big 10 Country" though...this is far from home!

1:45pm | Back on the road - time for mommy and baby to nap.

2:10pm | I awake as I receive a call from Tom, our realtor. We have one offer on showing #1 {which happened to arrive at 9:30am, instead of 10:30am}, but we have at least one other offer coming in...and we will have a total of 12 showings today. Great news, we are thrilled!

{Too excited to sleep}

2:45pm | 3 offers are now on the table, all showings have been through and all realtors have been offered a chance to make an offer on the home.

{Insert about 4 phone calls with our realtor}

5:15pm | Home is sold - we are feeling victorious!

5:30pm | We enter Colorado!

There is nothing around...so we finally stop at a little gas station. The ladies Rest Room makes me thankful Miss L is not potty trained yet, as I think we would have been slapping a diaper on her instead of using this Rest Room. There was a fun dinosaur statue out front to play on, and we said hello to a few doggies that were also making a pit stop. Back on the road...Mommy's turn to drive.

5:40pm | Tons of lightening and dark skies ahead as we are in the dessert plains of Colorado.

I pull over to let Jer drive when the tumbleweed are blowing across the road and it looks as if we are driving into the eye of the storm. We unknowingly stopped next to an extremely large cattle farm. as I opened the door, I thought to myself "what dirty diaper did we leave in the car!???" but the smell was that of 1,000 diapers made me quickly realize...it was manure...and it lingered in the car for a bit, but we become distracted by the storms ahead. I turn on a local FM station and learn that we are driving through a Tornado Warning. The muted green sky is quite scary and we decided to power through as fast as can {after all, the speed limit is 75...which translates to 85 in our car!}

6:20pm | Back to blue skies and sunshine, we both are relieved as we continue to listen to the radio meteorologist tell everyone in the areas south of us to take shelter. We both view the storm in our rear, via the mirrors.
Look how dark it is behind us from the mirror. We were already in blue skies and sunshine.

8:00pm (7:00pm MT) | We have arrived, Yay!!! Thanks to our Lord for watching over and guiding us..

Summary:
Just over 900 miles and 14 hours from Lakeville to Denver, including 2 hours {lunch + 2 stops}
Miss L napped for just 3.5 hours of the 14 {a lot less than expected}
Her favorite toys included: baby doll + bottle, her baby laptop, books, cell phones, and of course the ipad..oh and Mr. Cole! She did manage to eat 2 of her 3 meals while traveling in her car seat, her "food bag" was packed solid prior to leaving!

It wasn't nearly as bad as we anticipated and leaving/arriving in the daylight was really helpful.

Now, we begin making our {very small} furnished one-bedroom apartment a little more like home; while we search for our next permanent home. I have already found library storytime for toddlers, the nearest Starbucks {someone was up at 5:45am this morning}, a park and a community waterpark/splash pad. Now...I just need my car to arrive either Monday or Tuesday!

Oh, and a celebratory dinner tonight! :)

Mission: Turks & Caicos

A little "bold" for me...but I couldn't resist the name of the nail polish: "Turquoise & Caicos."
I have been dying to schedule a vacation to beautiful islands of Turks & Caicos for a while now...and this nail polish just seemed very motivational!

Summer has arrived...Finally!

With J away from home the past 5 weeks, us ladies have been making the best of our days without him. Unfortunately, the first 4 weeks felt more like March or April and less like summer. Every day was rainy, gray, cloudy and rather chilly. At one point recently, the weatherman said 27 of the last 36 days had some form of precipitation - rain or the white stuff!!! The depressing weather extends to my line of work as I have crafted a dozen or so emails to members about "pool closures" or cancelled events due to rain and chilly temperatures.

The past week or "so" has been feeling more like summer - which makes a daddy-less home much more tolerable. The sun shines perfectly in my room to jolt me out of bed like a cup of Archer Farms Cinnamon Vanilla Nut Coffee! We have officially stowed away the fleece and most importantly, us ladies have been able to get back to being the lil' happy, social butterflies that we are!

Below is snapshot of our week last week!
Monday -
Dinner on the patio of one of our favorite restaurants - Valley Tap House
We met up with the "C" family, including one of our besties, Miss Cece for dinner {kids eat free, wahoo!} and a Summer Shandy for mommy!
Miss L and Miss Cece playing in the fountain while we wait for a table on the patio!

Tuesday -
Enjoyed a nice stroll to the nearby park with neighbors Stephanie and her babes. I must admit lil' Brooks is one of the most adorable little boys and I was really hoping to set-up an arranged marriage for 22 years from now! These little blondies are sooo cute together!

Two lil' monkeys!

Wednesday -
Miss L played at a neighbor's home {thank you Amy & Co.}, while mommy "worked on the house" to prepare it for sale. Essentially, storing toys away to make my formal dining room... a formal dining room again! We are extremely blessed with amazing friends called neighbors that have come to the rescue time and time again; and shower us with generous amounts of love & support.

Thursday -
Just us two girls grabbed some Thai food from a local place and hopped in the car to have a picnic in the park. Miss L doesn't really "dig" Thai food yet-  but she does eat mass amounts of Jasmine Rice! It was a beautiful evening and made for a fun memory!

Friday -
Daddy arrived home for a weekend of fun and Father's Day celebration. Yay! More to come in a different post...

Long time...no post!

1whirl·wind

noun \-ËŒwind\
1: a small rotating windstorm of limited extent
2a : a confused rush : whirl <a whirlwind of meetings>
 b : a violent or destructive force or agency

When people say their day {er, weekend, month, life} was a "whirlwind," what do they mean exactly?

Allow me to enlighten you...

May 8 - Daddy arrives home with balloons for Miss L and a bottle of bubbly for mommy! Jeremy accepts a promotion to manage Hertz, Dollar & Thrifty Car Rental in Denver, Colorado {insert: tears of joy, laughter, excitement, nervousness and celebrations}

May 15- Daddy leaves for his new gig in DEN, not returning home until May 24th.
Mommy & Miss L sadly spend nearly every.single.day evening sulking, indoors, as Mother Nature "blesses" us Minnesotans with either rain, cold or BOTH, every single day. As if we didn't suffer enough with snow on the ground May 2nd??!

Insert Typical Day:
Mommy experiences the life of a single-working-mom...perhaps the only job more difficult than a stay at home mom {which I have tons of respect for}. I am thankful this is temporary and have a new found appreciation for those single parents that do not have a choice. Drop-off around 8am, countless meetings/phone calls/emails that must promptly end by 5:15pm to arrive at Daycare in the nick of time {6pm}. Dinner + playtime + Caillou on TV + bath {some days} round out the long day at 8:30pm...and off to bed, usually with a glass of wine or cocktail to relax myself to sleep.

May 24 - Memorial Day weekend - spent with Daddy and Grandma came to down {pre-planned prior to the "move}

We enjoyed visiting a local winery where mommy was able to taste ALL of their wines - as in, 14+, it was ridiculous - even for this wino!

We experienced mass at the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis. Last time Grandma came to town, we attended mass at the Saint Paul Cathedral, so it was neat to see the Minneapolis "monument." It really is special having such amazing places to worship within 30 minutes of our home. On a different note: J felt "sick" again and turned white as a ghost..and felt like he was going to faint again...just 3 weeks after his ambulance ride to the ER. :( I'm growing anxious and worried - particularly as he is flying solo in a different state.

The other "big" excitement on Sunday was Miss L's first haircut. Her "homeless style hair style" was looking rather shaggy and in a desperate plea to encourage her hair to grow...we paid a visit to the Kids Cutters! They were great with her - bubbles, TV, sucker...soon her tears disappeared. Now, she has a cute lil' bob and it is all one length!

The long weekend finished with a visit to downtown Minneapolis to show Grandma the Stone Arch Bridges, the Mississippi River and the need to get out of the house, after all, it was cold and rainy all.weekend {which makes mommy very excited to move to a place with 300+ days of sunshine each year!!!}

This momma needs to hit the hay...that is, after a little Jimmy Fallon!

Hello, again!

Nearly 3 weeks has passed since I last logged on here...oh dear! It has been a busy {as usual}, snowy few weeks.

We were heading to Michigan after my last post on April 11th; that was fun...a separate post to follow.

Then the following weekend, after two consecutive weekends of travel...we decided to dig into a {small} bathroom renovation. {Note: we are still using our "guest bath" due to the renovation}

Last weekend, Mother Nature decided to reward us tease us with temperatures on Friday in the 60's, Saturday in the 70's and Sunday in the 80's. It was just a nice taste of summer. Grilling out with friends, runs outside and walks to the park. Unfortunately, it was without some drama...as Jeremy woke up Sunday feeling sick.

Jeremy was tied to the couch with a bit of the flu, most of the day. Late in the day, he decided to get up and go to sleep upstairs...and he didn't make it. He felt faint by the time he reached our kitchen and then decided to come back to the Living Room to tell me and instead, he fainted and fell down flat on his face. Fortunately, Miss L was napping at the time because it was really scary for me. I immediately thought he was having a seizure or something. I rolled him on his back and called 911. An ambulance ride to the ER was in order...followed by lots of blood work, x-rays, EKG...and it turns out he was probably just too dehydrated from the flu earlier. Our fabulous neighbors swept in to take care of Miss L, so we did not have to worry about her. By Wednesday, J was feeling more like himself and our home was back to normal.

That meant this past weekend was jam packed, making up for lost time. Lots of "Home Depot runs" and we even hired our neighbor girl to come "play" with Miss L while we worked furiously. It was sooo nice - to feel productive AND to hear the sweet sound of giggles from our lil' girl.

Pictures to come soon...but I just wanted to write to say I am still here! Should be a fun, exciting week ahead...lots to write about soon.

Make it a great week!

Charlotte Airport - CLT - Review

Last month, we had the great pleasure of two layovers to/from Mexico at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, the 8th largest airport in the U.S. This was not our first CLT experience and we quickly remembered how much we enjoy the airport (and Charlotte).

Aside from being beautiful and clean; the terminal is filled with great shops and cute eateries. The smell of slow-cooked, sweet carolina bbq pork fills the air and the large, sun-filled windows make it super bright and warm!

The biggest reason this airport is probably #2 on my list is due to the fact that we found this awesome "nook" to rest and relax chase Miss L around until we are beyond exhausted. Since airport terminals tend to be tight and mass chaos, it was refreshing to step out of traffic and enjoy some playtime free of getting run over by rushed passengers.

The space is on the 2nd floor, just steps from the passenger traffic and is complete with rocking chairs (as seen on a big southern porch south of the Ohio River) and a eye-level view of this rotating artwork of various flight inventions for Miss L to gaze at with excitement.

Rocking - which lasted just a few minutes

Birds eye view of the Terminal

Perhaps you can see the artwork

If your travel plans give you the option of a layover, I would highly suggest CLT if possible due to it's an option. If you are flying US Air, it is probably more than an option, it probably is a natural part of your flight plan.

20-months of Laughter!

Today, we celebrate 20 months of Miss L! Or in better words - 20 months of laughter, joy, giggles, smiles and fun!

It seems like just yesterday we brought her home from the hospital and yet today, she is busy climbing the mountains called couches and chasing Mr. Cole around our home.

Ironically, she had an impromptu visit with her pediatrician today as she has been fighting a cold the past week, which turned into a non-stop discharge in her bloodshot eyes. Poor thing looked miserable while we spent the recent weekend bouncing around Chicago.

Turns out she has her first ear infection, which also included an eye infection. We were thankful it wasn't pink eye and she is already looking much better after two doses of medication today.
Her weight check today: 25# 8oz - about 50th %tile

She surprises us daily with a new word learned or a new phrase exclaimed. I think her biggest "thing" right now is saying Please and Thank You! Her polite ways quickly extended far beyond retrieving/accepting food, and she correctly applies them to nearly everything. Tonight, she was sitting on the lap of J, so I threw her "silky" blanket to them and she responded naturally, "thank you, mommy."

She also understands and uses "hot" and "cold" correctly.

Our new favorite snack is a slightly thawed, frozen Go-Gurt {Yogurt on the Go!}. She'll almost always eat pasta, corn and anything with peanut butter.

Despite being sick, we managed to have some fun in Chi Town - see pics below...

Playing on the play-airplane at MSP Terminal 2.
Both MSP Terminals are well-equipped with kid-friendly activity centers.
Lunch at Tesori, while visiting my former boss

Visiting "The Bean" with Daddy! It was super windy! Surprise?

Too bad Miss L was sick...would've been a super cute photo!

Our lil' water bug

Riding the "moving walkway" at MDW...entertaining a 20-month old AND the rest of MDW passengers! :)

Goodnight, Chicago! (Oh, we bought that book to add to our collection)

World Kindness Day

Last week was World Kindness Day and I think this date has never been more relevant than after the U.S. election and going into the holidays...
